Like the semicolon, the colon joins in one
sentence ideas that might be treated in separate sentences, strengthening
the bond between these ideas. This works well for examples.

as the fuel tank or the drive shafts.

stinginess of options, but with luck they'll fit your needs: your
account balance, say, or determining whether a deposit has cleared.

rings around the speakers every weekend afternoon: teen-agers in
spandex, 60-year-olds in hiking shorts, Wall Street traders, Broadway
dancers, Brooklyn detectives, German bankers, Brazilian nurses,
Nigerian vendors, celebrities like Morgan Freeman and Margaux Hemingway
bopping along next to bicycle messengers.
